Improving education in the universities of IS / IT

How to improve the process of preparation of students of high schools in areas of IS / IT? First goals are defined. Goals should be realistic and attainable.

The main objectives are:

1. to give a comprehensive understanding of what is and what is necessary (to get away from the problem of "this theorem need to prove another remarkable theorem!");

2. encourage self;

3. To create the opportunity to participate in a large project in different positions (with an internal competition, etc.).

The purpose №1

Everything is more or less clear. Honestly and, if possible, to objectively tell all the way from the end of [that you need at the exit] to the top of [what we do here and now]:

• existing / prospective threats and / or market requirements;

• methods and techniques used to identify and neutralize threats, existing solutions / products;

• stacks technologies, their applicability, especially;

• Basic technology and skills;

• setting the curriculum.

The purpose №2

It is clear that we want, but it is not always clear how to achieve this. Individual approach and more:

• introduce a competitive element, where the advantage can only give additional, albeit small, the effort of the student;

• Encourage participation in external events, when it is necessary "to protect the honor of the university", etc .;

• advise the good books that give knowledge and not discourage reading (even though the amount of, for example, Tanenbaum).

The purpose №3

"Mega-Projects" - large-scale projects, with clear goals and objectives for the implementation of which requires a large number of man-hours, different technologies can virtually endless process improvements, optimization and improvement.

This major project is good for the university:

• topics for publications and presentations at conferences;

• reserve for projects and dissertations;

• the interest of the students in the practical application of their work / knowledge.

And the learning process:

• students are offered a variety of tasks - subtasks of the project - how to control / course / diploma theses;

• students are introduced to the development of methodologies / design / project management;

• clear example of decomposing large tasks into separate sub-tasks;

• sub-tasks can be implemented by different students / groups to create competition;

• a student, choosing from the various subtasks of the project, the most interesting for him, it is better self-fulfilling, quickly finds "his calling";

• the need for interaction with other participants of the project develops communicative properties.
